Time is Running Out Quickly

On 27 January 2026, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists issued a statement about the risk of human extinction. Based on their analysis of global events, scientific data and political developments, the outlook was not promising.

While rewriting an article from exactly one year ago, the publication of the Epstein documents (only a portion of them) sent a chill down everyone's spine. Once again, it is clear to humanity why the Doomsday Clock has been moved forward.

In case you haven't heard of it, the "Doomsday Clock" is a symbolic measure representing the likelihood of humanity coming to an end. Based on observations, trends, and potential global outcomes, the time remaining until midnight on the clock increases or decreases. Naturally, we hope that the time increases, but unfortunately, the world does not work that way.

2020: 100 seconds — 2021: 100 seconds — 2022: 100 seconds — 2023: 90 seconds — 2024: 90 seconds —2025: 89 seconds

On this site, we can see the reasons why the clock time has been changed again since last year. I will summarise it for you, along with my personal thoughts:

  • A lack of proper leadership (or the madness of dictators). Countries are being governed by increasingly aggressive and authoritarian regimes.

  • The competitive, nationalistic and hostile attitudes of major powers such as the US, China and Russia and the collapse of international agreements.

  • Nuclear disaster scenarios are being mentioned more frequently and used as a constant threat. Wars involving missiles capable of causing widespread destruction and drone attacks.

  • Climate change is progressing faster than ever before. Record temperatures, forest fires, extreme rainfall, flooding and rising sea levels. Continued use of fossil fuels.

  • Inflation figures that are particularly acute in our country but which have also spread worldwide. Capitalism is more ravenous and voracious than ever before.

  • A topic I am very curious about how it might develop by 2027 (or by that time) and what might happen, is the excessive trust placed in artificial intelligence, media manipulation, the proliferation of fake content, and the rapid erosion of digital security (perhaps even its complete demise). Worst of all, even those developing artificial intelligence are unsure where control might lead. Some of you may have heard Geoffrey Hinton's 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics lecture. He states that the unstoppable rise of artificial intelligence, which he describes as "no longer science fiction", is vulnerable to threats from biological designs, weapons and developments. It is also well known that a second pandemic scenario no longer seems impossible. Moreover, when humanity reaches this turning point, we will be discussing entirely different matters.

How many negative thoughts have I put into your head all at once? While we struggle economically in our own "little world" and blame each other for the dilemmas imposed on us by those in power, they ensure their own continuity. This is because they must periodically create new obstacles, ideological currents, calamities and strategies to control or neutralise the masses.

So, think about the issues that preoccupy your life. What are you most exposed to? Politics is the most obvious one. In politics, lying is the only valid strategy, and your normal, rational thoughts are not defended. This is especially true of politicians, whom you value for some reason despite their dishonesty. Financial difficulties are a whole other matter, but I won't discuss that here because nobody is paid what they're worth. Another issue is the intrusion into your life of absurd views held by minorities that don't concern you. You can't deny that you encounter things in films, TV shows, songs and games that impose views on you which don't represent your culture or common sense. If you ask yourself, “Why do these things constantly appear in front of me?”, the answer is clear: you need to broaden your thinking about things you currently dismiss as conspiracy theories. This can be difficult if you are not naturally open-minded. There's a saying I like to use when the occasion arises: “Not believing in any conspiracy theories is a conspiracy theory in itself.” Unfortunately, this remains an overly naive explanation because, friends, we live in a terrible world.

In a world where fiction takes precedence over reality, we have no control. While evil is everywhere, it is not the hard-working people who simply want to “live” that are slowly becoming corrupted, but rather the evildoers who take centre stage. In short, evil breeds evil and parasites latch on to us. Of course, we should not be entirely hopeless, but nor should we be foolish. At the very least, let's remember that the gradual fading of this symbolic clock reflects reality.

Thank you for joining us today. My name is Alexandra Bell and I am the president and CEO of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. It is the determination of the Bulletin's Science and Security Board that humanity has not made sufficient progress on the existential risks that endanger us all. We thus move the clock forward. The Doomsday Clock is a tool for communicating how close we are to destroying the world with technologies of our own making. The risks we face from nuclear weapons, climate change, and disruptive technologies are all growing. Every second counts, and we are running out of time. It is a hard truth, but this is our reality. It is now 85 seconds to midnight. This is the closest the world has ever been to midnight.

However, having read the published documents, which only mention them in passing, I am surprised that the number is 85 rather than 35, just as with the important documents that have come to light in the past.

I am certain that some people still find the idea of our “end” drawing ever closer abstract. Some undoubtedly view this as a product of our times and think it is exaggerated. But remember, we are creatures that adapt — or conform, if you prefer — and forget. It is in our nature to forget what happens in our lives and in society as a whole unless we document it. Otherwise, we couldn't be human, we would go mad.

I used to live life to the fullest and dream about the beauty and innovation the future would bring. However, I am slowly coming around to the idea that it is perhaps "healthier" for human life to be so limited.

Remember the pandemic: a huge crisis, devastating turmoil, new lifestyles and concepts, technological developments, and those who emerged as winners or losers. And I'm not even talking about those who were lost. So, who among us was in a "normal" state of mind back then? Looking back now, the past five or six years don't really matter because they're in the past. Everything that ruled our lives during that period was related to the virus. But isn't something needed for global continuity? Isn't the cruelty and violence of war increasing? Are unheard-of dangers, technological advances, terrorist activities and political nonsense not running rampant? So no, it doesn't just feel "worse than usual" because of the period we're in. Everything is getting worse.

I realise that I cannot offer you a positive conclusion. However, we must not forget that we cannot move forward without facing reality, however unclear the path ahead may be. Therefore, we should focus on improving our own lives and questioning anything that is not directly relevant to us. We should not be afraid to reject options that limit us to two choices. We must recognise what is imposed on us and turn away, regardless of what anyone else thinks. So, whether the clock goes this way or that, let us focus on the limitations of our lives. Let us observe what happens to the clock, but also try to maximise our own “ticking”.
